Ads to take over the titlebar of your browser!

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 2, 2002 at 3:37:24 PM
Beware, Web surfers. Soon not even that dull, gray toolbar at the top of your Internet browser will be safe from advertisers.

A New York online ad technology firm, United Virtualities, is preparing to introduce a product that will allow advertisers to automatically change the appearance of Web browsers, usurping some of the functions built into popular browsers designed by Microsoft Corp. and Netscape Communications, a unit of AOL Time Warner Inc.
- NeoWin

Is it just me, or does that feel like a security issue? Why should something that I run on my computer to give me functionality also give me grief by placing ads. It isn't enough that ads are scattered all over the net (None on this site yet), but now they go and do this!

AS SEEN ON SLASHDOT!

Poster: {ASE}MasterAron
Posted on March 31, 2002 at 3:45:18 AM
After getting the confirmation, I attempted to warn both Aron and Chris in time, but as of now, neither are aware of what is yet to come.

Congratulations out to AA, our favourite K'Nuhk, whose already reknown article has been considered Dot-worthy.

Condolences out to Ping, who's server may die. If the timing is for my zone, like all other things on slashdot, he's still possess about one and one half hours to react.

UPDATE:
Ping and Aron are both ready. Dot-heads wanting to discuss AA's article with him will find him in the chat. chat.planetz.net 7000 #aselabs

We'll be waiting out the SDE there.

Celeron, or Pentium 3 at 1.5Ghz

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 29, 2002 at 5:09:17 PM
If you want to see how a Pentium 3 would perform at 1.5ghz, Xbit has the scoop on the overclocking potential of the 1A Ghz .13 Celerons. It wipes out the P4, which is why Intel doesn't want to release higher clocked versions of the Celeron.

The Inquirer has a roadmap of the JEDEC DDR standards (or soon to be). One thing is for sure, DDR will be able to keep up with CPU speeds so there won't be a potential bottleneck there. Look at this chart:

AMD PR numbers misleading?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 27, 2002 at 4:49:27 AM
I saw this at The Inquirer also. It seems that they got a hold of a white paper from the Aberdeen Group that labels the PR schema of the AMD chips misleading.

AMD’s methodology will not support that without becoming quaintly obsolete in another 90 days as the methodology breaks down completely over time. Bad science in the name of customer advocacy is not the approach to market that Aberdeen recommends. Aberdeen is not alone in questioning gigahertz equivalency. Close reading of the PC trade press and PC performance Web sites shows an increasing skepticism, and it would not be surprising to see the press turn surly.

There is a truth to this though, if you keep increasing the mhz rating from AMD's 66mhz increase and Intel's 100mhz, the ratio of the chips will be nuts as time and speed progresses.

No sight of the R300

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 27, 2002 at 4:40:21 AM
The Inquirer is wondering when the R300 details will be coming out and when we will see it. I was wondering also. Even details of the RV250 (Radeon 8500XT) haven't been known.

ATI hasn't even showed the RV250 to any kind of a wide audience yet, even though it's malingering in the software labs, where developers strive to get every inch of performance out of drivers.
